Frequently asked questions

Everything therapists ask before their first online BLS session.

Clinical basics

01What is bilateral stimulation?

Bilateral stimulation (BLS) is the rhythmic left–right sensory input used during EMDR therapy — visual, auditory or tactile — to support processing of distressing memories.

02What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based eight-phase psychotherapy for trauma, developed by Francine Shapiro and recommended for PTSD by the WHO, APA and NICE.

03How does bilateral stimulation work?

The leading explanation is working-memory theory: performing a dual attention task while recalling a distressing memory taxes working memory and reduces the vividness and emotionality of that memory.

04Why use alternating audio during EMDR?

Alternating stereo audio provides the dual-attention task without requiring the client to track a visual target. It is useful when eye tracking is fatiguing or when the client prefers to close their eyes.

05What patterns are available?

Seven patterns: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, circular, infinity (figure-eight), pendulum and smooth random. Speed, size and audio pan depth are independently adjustable.

Online & telehealth

06Can EMDR be done online?

Yes. Online EMDR uses the same eight-phase protocol; only BLS delivery is adapted for video. Published outcomes are broadly comparable to in-person work when protocol fidelity is maintained.

07Does online EMDR work?

Peer-reviewed studies and case series report outcomes for online EMDR broadly comparable to in-person EMDR when protocol fidelity is preserved and client selection is appropriate.

08Can bilateral stimulation be performed remotely?

Yes. Visual and auditory BLS render on the client's own device through a browser tab, synchronised to the therapist's controls in real time.

09What is browser-based EMDR?

Browser-based EMDR is online EMDR delivered entirely through a web browser — no downloads, no client accounts and no operating-system lock-in.

10What equipment is needed for online EMDR?

A modern browser, a stable internet connection, a video platform (Zoom, Teams, Doxy.me, Google Meet or SimplePractice), and a browser-based BLS tool. Headphones on the client side are recommended when using auditory BLS.

11How do therapists conduct EMDR through telehealth?

The therapist runs the session on a video platform and delivers bilateral stimulation through a browser-based tool the client opens on their own device. The eight-phase protocol is preserved.

Product & setup

12Do my clients need to install anything?

No. Clients open a link in any modern browser — desktop, tablet or phone. No app, no account, no download.

13Does BilateralSync work with Zoom, Teams and Doxy.me?

Yes. BilateralSync runs in a browser tab alongside any video platform: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Doxy.me, Google Meet, SimplePractice and others.

14How low is the latency?

Sub-100 ms between therapist controls and the client display. Changes to speed, pattern or audio are visible/audible essentially instantly.

15Can I use both visual and auditory BLS at the same time?

Yes. Visual and stereo-panned auditory BLS run in perfect sync.

Privacy & pricing

16Is BilateralSync GDPR-ready?

Yes. No client PII is collected, sessions use unguessable codes, analytics is cookieless and anonymous. A DPA is available for clinics on request.

17Is there a free plan?

Yes. Free includes 1 session per calendar month with all 7 bilateral stimulation patterns, stereo audio and the full client view. It does not include unlimited sessions, saved presets or session history.
